Asahi Kasei’s Commitment to the Electric Vehicle Market

Electric vehicles will soon be the vehicle of choice over the traditional combustion engine. APNA has and will continue to invest in our technology dedicated to advancing the electrical vehicle market growth. This aligns with our initiatives toward providing sustainable solutions while focusing on continuous improvement.

To meet the unique requirements of our customers and this market, our products offer a diverse range of characteristics that are critical for electric vehicles. By using plastics in place of the traditional steel and aluminum applications allows for vehicle applications to be lighter weight, giving batteries an extended range of use. Many of our product grades feature high flame retardancy, ideal for applications in this segment.

Asahi Kasei offers both semi-crystalline and amorphous grades for various electric vehicle battery applications, including injection molding and thermoforming process capability. Our grade offerings can be tailored from low warpage, high rigidity and impact, superior electrical properties, and flame-retardant characteristics. Asahi Kasei can support part design optimization and mold flow analysis including CAE analysis.

Extending Battery Range

  • Xyron PPE/PS material offers weight savings by providing low density, high flowability and dimensional stability.
  • Thermylon® and Leona™, our PA66/6i grades, provide high strength, thin wall rigidity and high flowability.
  • Thermylene® material features low density and high flowability as a more cost-optimized selection.

Safety

  • Xyron™, Thermylon® and Leona™ grades provide improved electrical performance and safety with high CTI / electrical properties, high heat resistance and flame retardancy.
  • Thermylene® material features flame retardancy, low moisture absorption, heat resistance, chemical resistance providing the material with improved electrical performance and safety features.

Sustainability

  • Xyron™, Thermylon® and Leona™ contribute to a safer environment by being a non-halogenated and non-red phosphorus material.
  • Thermylene® flame retardant grades are Deca-BDE free, making them safer for the environment. Thermylene is also RoHS compliant.

Superior Featured Material

APNA developed an internal test method to compare flammability performance during an extended flame exposure event. Molded plaques were exposed to a flame exceeding 1400°F. Flame exposure continued until a burn-through hole appeared or until 5 minutes elapsed.

In the video below, we show a highlight of a previously conducted burn test. Our featured material, Leona, displays exceptional flammability performance, perfect for rigorous and challenging environments.
